Buldogs go to 2-2 with two-point win

Fresh from its second win of the season, Davenport Coach John Greenfield has his squad preparing for the Bulldogs’ 200th victory on Friday night since becoming an eight-man football team in 2004.

“If we can win this game, it will be the 200th win as an eight-man football team. I’ve been been the only head coach at Davenport since we began eight-man football,” he said.

Davenport defeated Southwest Covenant last week 20-18 with a goal line stand on a two-point conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter.

The win evened the Bulldogs’ record at 2-2 as they get ready to host Alex Friday night at Bulldog stadium in a homecoming contest.

Greenfield said that homecoming festivities are scheduled at 6:45 p.m. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m., he said.

“We played well,” Greenfield said of his team’s win against the Patriots. “We let at least three scoring opportunities get away from us, two on penalties,” he noted.

“Our quarterback, Gage Keith had a good game,” Greenfield thinks. “We did some good stuff, but penalties cost us field position and a couple of touchdowns,” he said. Greenfield mentioned the Bulldogs had only one turnover in the game.

He said he expects Alex to play hard. “Their numbers are down, they have a mixture of seniors and underclassmen. Traditionally, they’ve become a good rival,” Greenfield added.

The coach pointed out, “We’re as healthy as we’ve been all year.”

Alex will be the final non-district contest for Davenport. Next week the Bulldogs will open district play hosting Strother at 7:30 p.m.
