Town Talk

Get ready to put on your boogie woogie shoes and join Town Talk and the American Legion Auxiliary as we host a night with The Andrew Sisters tribute trio out of Oklahoma City.

In the years just before and during World War II, the Andrews Sisters were at the height of their popularity, and the group still tends to be associated in the public’s mind with the war years.

They had numerous hit records during these years with some of those having service or military related themes, including “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, “Three Little Sisters,” and “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else but Me).”

The event is being sponsored by Stroud businesses, RCB Bank and Banc First. It will be held on Saturday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. at the American Legion building.

In last week’s Town Talk I mistakenly listed the date as November 11th. Please note the corrected date. All American Legion members will receive a complimentary ticket. Any other servicemember or veteran will be admitted free of charge if he or she shows a military ID or wears a service hat.

General admission tickets may be obtained by making a $20 donation at Stroud Dry Cleaning, Unique Market or calling me at 918-527-9833. I wish you would please plan on attending to show your support for our veterans.

Jimmie Abercrombie’s wife, Linda, passed away last week in Wharton, Texas.

Her memorial service and interment were held at Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Bros. Funeral Home. Jimmie, Class of 1967, was raised in Stroud along with his two older brothers, Ronnie, Class Abercrombie who owned a restaurant on Main Street aptly named Herman’s.

They say we remember moments and one of those for me is seeing Jimmie tap dancing with Bruce Jones on stage at C.B. Wright Auditorium.

I was several years younger than Jimmie and Bruce and was starry-eyed over the cute, handsome high school boys. I can still see them tap dancing to this day and thinking those two had it all PLUS they could dance!

Jimmie was one of Mom’s students and so she attended Linda’s service and was pleased to be able to visit with him. She reminded him of his tap-dancing days, and he told her his mom asked him to take tap lessons and he did it to please her.

Shows what a nice guy he is. She also enjoyed her visit with Ronnie. He was one of her brother’s, Bobby Walker, best friends so she felt a special connection to him. Town Talk offers condolences to Jimmie and his family.

Milfay graduates held their alumni gathering this past Saturday at the old Milfay School. Peggy Grant Pool and Lynetta Grant organized the reunion. My mom attended this gathering because she was a former high school teacher in Milfay.

She enjoyed visiting with friends and former students. She also visited with Ed Wilkinson, former Stroud teacher, coach and principal who was also the Superintendent in Milfay at one time.

Ed told Mom he appreciated my encouraging people to shop local. He said he was a “shop local guy” and it was something he remembered former Stroud Superintendent C.B. Wright had encouraged his teachers to do; spend their paychecks in Stroud.

If you think about what we gain as a community by keeping as many of our income dollars local as possible, it’s a no-brainer.

I need to ask forgiveness from the ladies of the Sisters of Beta Sigma Phi for omitting a big thank you to them in last week’s paper.

The sorority, spearheaded by Pam Clements, stitched adding fresh straw, new adornments and gussied up their clothing.

We have used these scarecrows for several years and they needed a little TLC.

Members also donated some new scarecrows so that we could decorate even more corners of Main Street.

This group of women helps with so many community projects and gives back to Stroud with volunteer and monetary donations.

Thank you, Sisters of Beta Sigma Phi, for all you do for Stroud!

Activities for the week include the high school Tigers football team taking on the Hartshorne Miners this Friday night in Hartshorne.

This will be another district game for the Tigers. The Middle School Tigers have a week off with no game scheduled for Monday, October 10th.

The Masonic Lodge will hold its monthly all-youcan-eat breakfast this Saturday, October 8th at the Agricultural Building from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. for $7.00.

Let’s support our local businesses whenever possible, which includes our new miniature golf course.

Putt Putt Kicks is now open on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

We had players this weekend from Depew and Davenport, so thanks to our neighbors for playing golfwith us.

The miniature golf course is a non-profit activity and all monies taken in go to pay the golf course expenses or help with additional projects.

If you haven’t checked it out, come play a round. Shop local, dine local and play a little miniature golf, locally.

If you would like to host a party or play at a time other than normal operating hours call me at 918-5279833 and we can make that happen.

Have a great week and thanks for choosing to shop local………………first!
