For the 19th consecutive year under Head Coach John Greenfield, the Davenport Bulldodgs are headed to the playoffs after defeating Depew 30-12 in the final regular season game for both teams.
With the win, the Bulldogs finish the regular season at 6-4, placing third in the district with a 4-2 mark. They are headed to Pioneer-Pleasant Vale in the first round of the playoffs Friday night, Greenfield said.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Greenfield said against Depew, “We played pretty well. But we got another injury,” he noted.
“Colton VanFossen injured his shoulder. We thought at first he had broken his shoulder. But we’re pretty sure he might have a slight shoulder separation,” the coach said.
His status for the contest with Pioneer wouldn’t be known until late in the week, Greenfield stated.
In the game with Depew last week, Greenfield said, “We took it down the field on a long drive and scored, then we scored again later and led 16-0 at halftime. We got in front 22-0 before they were able to score and they never got closer than 14 to 16 points.”
He said Depew was big but commented, “We did really well on both offense and defense.”
Looking ahead to the matchup with Pioneer, Greenfi eld thinks, “They’re pretty good. They’re big. We scrimmaged them before the season. We need to move the ball and stop them,” he added.
“They have several big kids. We did all right against them in the scrimmage, but we’ve changed some things and so have they,” Greenfield continued.
The coach pointed out this is 19th season at Davenport, adding, “We haven’t missed the playoffs yet. Only once have we not made it to the second round.”
