Brooklyn Hammons, an incoming freshman at Chandler, won the 100 meters and took third in 200 meter dash and the long jump at the Region 9 Championship in Jonesboro, Ark.
Competing for the Oklahoma Jaguars Track Club, she qualified to compete in the USATF National Junior Olympics in all three events.
“I just thought it would be fun,” said Hammons, who is in her third year of running competitively.
Despite not having a long running career under her belt yet, Hammons has already begun to impress at several competitions. She competes in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m races as well as the long jump. Hammons has collected an impressive set of medals at local, regional and state meets.
“I’m excited to run against new and different types of people and have more competition,” Hammons said about moving up to high school level competition this upcoming year.
While she also plays softball and basketball, track has been where Hammons has really excelled. She qualified for the USATF Junior Olympics taking place in Eugene, Ore, but will be unable to compete. Although, she plans to compete if she qualifies for next year’s competition.
