The Davenport High School Bulldogs dropped their football season opener last week at home, losing to Oklahoma Bible Academy 54-8.
Davenport’s veteran coach John Greenfield said this week, “We’re trying to get better. We just couldn’t stop them, we made too mistakes and let them get the momentum just before halftime.” Greenfield said the game ended late in the third quarter when OBA was ahead by 46 points.
“We start a freshman quarterback, Chace Buchanan, and our two running backs are a sophomore and a senior, the latter who hasn’t played in high school previously,” the coach noted.
Greenfield said the Trojans were “pretty good,” but maybe not quite as good as last season.
The Bulldogs began Monday preparing for another home contest this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Caddo. “Really don’t know much about them,” Greenfield said. “They had a pretty good season last year I think.”
He said one of his players suffered a sprained knee and will be out this week.
The Trojans gained 419 yards on the ground and added 30 in passing for a total of 449 for the game.
Meanwhile, Davenport managed but 118 yards rushing and 109 yards through the air for a total of 227.
The Bulldogs’ Jackson Lane led in rushing with 71 yards with Buchanan gaining 42 on the ground. Dez Finney had four and Trai Good-Strong added one.
Lane had the lone touchdown for Davenport. Buchanan threw for 109 yards on 10 attempts, giving up a lone interception. Good-Strong had 73 yards receiving for Davenport with Riley Ethridge pulling in the pigskin for 33 yards. Aidan Elmore had 3 yards catching the ball.
Elmore had the extra 2-point conversion. Leading tacklers for the Bulldogs were Lane and Finney with four solo tackles apiece.
