With several key players still out with injuries, the Davenport Bulldogs dropped their fifth game of the season Friday night, losing 48-0 to Southwest Covenant (SWC) in a homecoming contest.
The Bulldogs dropped to 0-5 on the season and travel to Alex this Friday night for their final nondistrict contest. Coach John Greenfield said kickoff is at 7 p.m Greenfield said this week, “We played pretty good and kept it close until just before halftime when they scored twice.”
Davenport only gave up a touchdown in the opening quarter of play, trailing SWC 8-0. But the visitors tallied 28 points in the second period, including two TD’s shortly before halftime, and the Bulldogs fell behind 36-0 at intermission.
The coach said, “After we moved it on them early, they started stunting on defense and that threw our kids off some. On offense they got several big plays, they picked up a fumble and ran it over 50 yards for a score.”
He noted SWC closed out the contest on two TD’s in the third period.
Greenfield said no one else was injured against SWC, but freshman quarterback Chace Buchanan who has been out several games along with Tyler Gilkeson and Aidan Stancell were all still out with injuries for last week.
Sophomore signal caller Colt Metcalf has handled the quarterbacking duties in Buchanan’s absence. “Hopefully we find out something on Chace’s injury later today (Monday),” he added.
“We might have Travis James back for Friday night. He’s a great big kid,” the coach said.
“Hopefully, we’ll get everybody back before district. We have next week (Oct. 6) off and open district play Thursday night, Oct. 12, against Summit Christian,” Greenfield stated.
Against SWC, the Bulldogs netted only 41 yards rushing, though Riley Ethridge gained 60 on the ground but Metcalf was a minus 19 yards.
Metcalf completed 6 of 13 passing attempts for 18 yards, Ethan Boggs led Davenport on defense with 3 solo tackles and 4 assists. Ethridge had 5 assists and Parker Halsey 4 assists with Wyatt Simon having 3 assists.
