Davenport 38, Summit 36

Davenport opened district action with a win last week, squeezing by Summit 38-36 in a home contest.

The Bulldogs are now 2-5 overall and 1-0 in district as they prepare to entertain Weleetka at home Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Coach John Greenfield said, “We fell behind 28-14 at the half I think, and then came back and we took the lead. Then they came back and took the lead,” he noted.

The coach continued, “We stopped them and got the ball back with 1:14 left in the game and were behind by six points. We hit a wheel route out of the backfield that went to their 10 or 12 yard line and scored, doing all of this in 29 seconds,” Greenfield added.

“We scored a touchdown and got the two-point conversion for a two-point lead with 45 seconds left in the game and won it,” he said.

Greenfield said his Bulldogs mainly stuck to the ground game “which was good for us, but we had some success throwing the ball too.”

Although the Bulldogs were victorious, the coach commented, “We had way too many mistakes. We fumbled the ball several times,” he added.

Injury-wise, Greenfield explained, “Don’t think we’re going to get quarterback Chace Buchanan back. He’s done for the season due to a back injury I think. We did get Aidan Stancell back for the Summit game and that gives us a little depth,” he said.

Buchanan has been out since earlier in the season. The coach said that center Ethan Boggs hurt a hand in last week’s game. “We’re not sure about him yet for Friday night’s game,” Greenfield commented.

Weleetka has lost only one game this season and that was to Regent Prep, Greenfield stated. He said they are multi-faced on offense, but primarily are a running team.

“They have a good defense,” he said.
