The Davenport Bulldogs took highly ranked Covington-Douglas deep into the fourth quarter before losing 72-27 in a road contest last Friday.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-3 in the district and 2-7 overall with a road contest coming up Thursday Thursday night against Coyle in the final regular season game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Coach John Greenfield said Thursday night’s matchup is for the fourth playoff spot in the district. “Win and we play next week, lose and we stay home and are finished for the year,” he noted.
Greenfield said at the start of the game their quarterback scampered for a touchdown, then the Wildcats recovered an onside kick and scored quickly and “before we knew it we were down 22-0. We were behind by 23 at the half,” the coach stated.
He said they shut down the Wildcats’ offense the second half, but his Bulldogs had trouble scoring after intermission.
“We finally got it going in the first half, and we got stops in the second half, but couldn’t do anything offensively ourselves. It was actually one of our better games of the season against Covington-Douglas,” he thought, which is ranked third or fourth in the state.
“They are the second best team we’ve played all season. Weleetka was the best,” he believes.
Greenfield stressed, “I was pleased with our effort. We’d move the ball in the second half, then we’d get a penalty or something else,” he said.
Davenport’s freshman quarterback Chase Mitchell completed 17 of his 30 passing attempts for 180 yards but had two two of his throws picked off. Mitchell had two rushing touchdowns.
Sophomore Brody Robinson carried the ball 20 times and gained 85 yards including two TD’s. Robinson had five solo tackles and six assists for a total of 11. He also caught four passes for 51 yards.
Devin Murfin managed six solo tackles and assisted with four others for a total of 10 and Aydan Stancell also had a total of 10 tackles.
