Lady Lions start season 2-0

Stroud clips Davenport; NRC gets historic wins

Chandler’s Lady Lions made the most of a trip to northern Oklahoma Monday, getting a one-hitter from Grace Hulsey to beat Ponca City, 6-0, and banging out 10 hits in a 12-3 dominating over Blackwell.

“For our first official game since March, we played pretty well, I thought,” Chandler coach Bryan Herring said. “I was extremely pleased with how we hit the ball.

“I was pleased with our discipline and our small ball. When we needed to get bunts down, we got them down.”

The Lady Lions got an unearned run in the first inning against Ponca City, and that turned out to be all the offense Hulsey needed.

She took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh, struck out 10 and walked just one.

Hannah Edmonds went 3-for-4 to place the Chandler offense.

The Lady Lions stole 10 bases in 11 attempts against Ponca City.

In the Blackwell game, Kodi Vega hit two triples and a single and scored two runs.

Jaelyn Robertson homered for Chandler in the second inning.

“It’s early and we’re really young” Herring said. “It’s going to come back to how hard we work. There were good things and there were bad things we did, and the good out-numbered the bad.”

Chandler is back in action Thursday at the Cushing tournament.

Stroud dropped a 10-5 decision to Beggs on Monday, but got a strong twohit shutout from Jadyn Young to beat Davenport 3-0 on Tuesday.

She struck out six and walked only one.

The Lady Tigers got only three hits of their own but used alert base-running to help up three runs in the bottom of the first.

Like Chandler, Stroud is back in action at the Cushing tournament on Thursday.

It was a historic day in Pott County as North Rock Creek run-ruled Luther, 9-1, and picked up the first win in the school’s varsity history.

NRC is in the third year of its high school and didn’t field a fast-pitch team last fall.

This year, they’re playing with two juniors and a squad full of freshman, but didn’t look it on Monday.

The Lady Cougars spotted Luther a run in the first, but tied it in their half of the inning and belted 14 hits en route to the win.

Haley Hacker allowed only one hit to get the win in the circle and Caty Baack sent a no-doubter over the wall in left field for the school’s first-ever varsity home run.

“This was a huge, huge deal, not only for the school but for these girls to have the first win under their varsity belts,” said NRC coach Chance Griffin. “It’s a big deal that I will cherish forever, and I know they will, as well, and the school history.

“As long as they stay coachable and stay with the grind we’ve been doing physically and mentally, the ceiling is really high for this group.

“It’s been fun in this short amount of time.”

The Lady Cougars came back on Tuesday to run-rule Varnum 10-2 in five innings.

Hannah Earlywine cranked a home run and Liyah Dauman went 4-for-4, giving her eight hits in eight at-bats in the two games.

NRC is back in action at the Ripley tournament.
