Town Talk

Can you believe it’s February? I can because love is in the air, love from our alums to their hometown. I have told you readers for several months that I wanted Town Talk to put a miniature golf course on Stroud’s Main Street – Route 66. I decided if we were going to have it up and running by the time summer rolled around, I better get to raising some money. Our alums have a Facebook page and that is a great way to spread the word about things we are doing here in Stroud. Town Talk posted asking classes to donate a hole for their hometown. To do so classes would need to raise $2000 and class years would be posted at one of each of the nine holes. Today, only a week and one-half later there have been pledged contributions for ten holes plus. That is fantastic news because there will be other expenses besides just our golf holes. We will line the holes with river rock and have walking pavers to take golfers from one hole to the next. We will need a “shed” for our clubhouse and snack shack, a fence and signage. I have been over-whelmed with the response from our alums. It shows what great memories we all have of growing up in Stroud.

Classes pledging to sponsor holes, thus far, are Class of 1958, spearheaded by CJ Pickering; Class of 1962, spearheaded by Donna Ashford Dundee; Class of 1967 spearheaded by J.R. Owens; Class of 1973, spearheaded by Debbie Willis Austin; Class of 1976, spearheaded by Angie Poskey Kircher; Class of 1978 spearheaded by Alan Mauldin; Class of 1980, spearheaded by Kim Edwards Huffman; Class of 1990, spearheaded by Candy Douglas Cook; and Class of 1995 spearheaded by JP Morris and Jeremy Bivin. Pledges and donations are coming in every day. We have received so much support we may have to have two classes sponsor one hole. What a wonderful problem to have!

Our Lincoln County Express train engine will kick off the golf course at hole one. Donations from Tim & Kathy Moore, Ivoria Conley, and Marvin & Lu Corser are helping us with our final payment on that piece of Stroud history. Ivoria and Lu are both Stroud alums and Kathy is a retired teacher from Stroud High School.

Town Talk has been on Main Street this week talking to local business owners about lighting up our downtown by outlining their businesses with white lights. Merchants will purchase the lights and Town Talk will be in charge of getting them installed. We hope to have this project underway in the next few weeks.
