Town Talk

A big thank you to Jim Hodgens, David Evans, Andrea Thompson, Cathy Terry, Larry Henderson, Alfreidya Webster, Joshua Cheek and Julie Bivin for helping spruce up Main Street last week at Town Talk’s “block party.”

We worked on grass and weeds between 4th and 5th Avenue on the north and south sides of Main Street and on those two avenue side streets. In addition, Julie Bivin cleaned off the pavilion floor. We are always amazed at how great Main Street looks with just a couple of hours of TLC. Our next “block party” is scheduled for September 8th at 7:00 p.m. Come join us and give back to your community.

Town Talk has turned in all monies from donations and fund raising to the City so now the pavilion bathroom construction can be scheduled. Our last donations came from David Evans, Jo Braden, Sherry Whisman and First Christian Church Outreach.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this project. Together we raised $7500 and Oklahoma Beautiful donated $2500.

Our condolences go out to Pam Hunt and her family in the death of her husband, Kelly Hunt. I only met Kelly once, but he had the kind of personality that made you feel like you’d known him forever. He came to one of our bingo fundraisers and was the life of the party. Pam told me he was a big kid at heart.

The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary will start meeting again this month. We will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14th.

The men and women will meet together to discuss fundraising ideas and fall projects and activities. The rest of the time will be spent working on clean-up of the back room at the Legion. Hope all members can come join us.

Town Talk’s next Farmer’s Market is scheduled for Saturday, September 12th. If you are interested in having a booth, please contact Mandy Clark on Town Talk Stroud ok Facebook page.

We had a good turnout at our Main Street meeting held on August 26th.

Those attending were City Attorney Jim Hodgens, Town Talk Volunteers David Evans, Mandy Clark, and Jo Braden, Clara Hodgens (Prairie Pointe), City Manager Bob Pearman, Mayor Tommy Smith, Dawn Welch (Rock Café), Heather Black (Welcome Home), Sheila Colburn (Estate Barn), Larry Henderson and Alfreidya Webster (Skyliner Motel).

The group followed up on ideas from our last meeting. Attendees also brainstormed about ideas for Main Street and discussed solutions for the grass, weed and pigeon problem on Main Street. Another meeting will be held later in September.

I love sayings about shopping local because they are so true. Shopping local, at least when possible, is a mindset that we had years ago when going to Oklahoma City or Tulsa was like going on a family vacation. Maybe it’s time we returned to that way of thinking.

I read this saying, “When you buy from a small business, an actual person does a little happy dance.” Just picture Bill Ash dancing like Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing or Gary Babinec doing Jon Heder’s moves from Napoleon Dynamite. If that doesn’t make you want to shop local, I don’t know what will.

Have a great week and remember to shop and dine local……….first.
