1. Columbus Day is a National Holiday in many countries of the Americas and elsewhere which officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer on behalf of Spain, who set sail across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a faster route to the Far East only to land at the New World.

His first voyage to the New World on the Spanish ships: Santa Maria, Niña, and the La Pinta took approx. 3 months. Columbus and his crew’s arrival to the New World initiated the Columbian exchange, which introduced the transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations, and technology in between the New World and the Old World.

This Holiday is observed by the various countries in the Americas, Italy, Spain, various Little Italys around the world. South Dakota, Alaska and Hawaii do not recognize Columbus Day.

I’m sure glad the Town of Meeker recognizes this holiday and the Town employees are able to enjoy the day off.

5. Meeker United

We have been contacted by a local business and they would like to feed the entire town on the day after the Christmas parade, which would be Sunday, December 6th , approx. 1 P.M., weather permitting, at no cost to the citizens of Meeker.

This would be a great opportunity for the businesses, churches, schools, and others to be involved. What a great thing to do for the town’s people this holiday season when so much has changed our world.

We would like to have the meeting concerning this proposal on Thursday, October the 15 th at 6:00 P.M. at City Hall. Please come prepared with ideas of what goods or services you may be able to provide.

We really encourage everyone to attend this meeting. Please call us at City Hall to speak with Dickie Walton at (405) 279-3320.

Let us stay positive and get this country back to where it needs to be.

Please keep your social distancing of six feet, wash hands often, and keep sanitizing.

Please continue to support our local businesses and spend your money locally.

The local businesses appreciate it, and the support keeps them in business.
