A bad attitude about cats

I’m convinced Brian’s cat has been practicing ninja skills.

Yes, Brian’s cat. I made it clear when we married that I was not adopting the cats.

I’m begrudgingly cohabitating with them.

The nearby presence of a cat will trigger instant sneezing, wheezing and itching for me. Allergy meds help but do not eliminate the cat allergy.

Two and half months ago I moved into the Blansett house with two cats who were accustomed to sleeping on the bed whenever they wanted.

They believe the master bed is, in fact, their bed and we’ve not been able to convince them otherwise.

Apparently cats are stubborn.

I can’t tolerate sleeping in cat hair so we developed a system of compromise.

1. Keep the bedroom door securely closed at night against the felines, allowing me to sleep while comfortably able to breathe.

2. After making the bed in the mornings, drape an extra blanket or sheet --a “sacrificial sheet”-- over the bed.

3. At night Brian removes the cat-hair-infested sacrificial sheet, carefully keeping the hairy side from touching the rest of the bedding while I stay a safe distance away.

4. Repeat every day for the rest of the cats’ lives.

Although that system is somewhat annoying I thought it would work.

However, Baggy can burrow under the top blanket to snooze, leaving black cat hair and allergens in the bed.

Every time he does that we have to change the sheets and blankets before I can sleep.

I asked him to stop. He hasn’t.

I started storing the pillows in the closet during the day, certain that would make it more difficult for him to get under the top blanket. It’s not working.

One day he pulled back the sacrificial sheet just so he could sleep on the bed’s comforter underneath. He didn’t even burrow under it. I suspect that was a deliberate move to prove a point.

Baggy seems to navigate every attempt to block him from burrowing into the bed, and I’m tired of washing bedding every day.

My next step may be bungee cords stretched across the sacrificial sheet.

Move those, ninja cat.
