Tigers dominate Mounds, go 10-0

Stroud rolled up 60 points in 18 minutes Friday and polished off Mounds, 60-20, on Senior Night.

The win gave the Tigers a perfect 10-0 record, one of only three schools in Class A to win 10 of 10. A fourth, Cashion, went 9-0.

“It’s very special, and difficult to do,” coach Christ Elerick said of the perfect regular season. “We had some big games very early in the season that could have kept it from happening, but we found ways to win those and then rolled through the back half of the season.”

The Tigers have been unbeaten twice before under Elerick - in 2009 and 2011 - and also went 10-0 in 1970.

The game was the last regular-season outing for this year’s seniors.

Elerick said he began coaching five of the seniors when they were in the third or fourth grade, with the others beginning soon after. Included in that group are his sons, Drew and Grant.

“There is a lot of history there,” he said. “As far as Drew and Grant go, there are a lot of different emotions.

“Some are sad, because we are headed down the homestretch and the end of a special time is near. But a lot are happy. It’s a milestone and they have had the opportunity to reach it with a great bunch of guys.

“As a parent, you are happy that they have gotten to experience playing high school football at a place like Stroud - where the Friday night lights shine a little bit brighter. A place where high school football is special.

“I’m glad they got to be a part of that. They have all made memories that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

The Tigers racked up almost 500 yards of total offense, with 99 of them coming on one play, a pass to Gage Parrick on the final play of the first quarter.

“They pinned us deep on a punt, and we had a play we liked and went with it,” Elerick said. “It was a zero protection play and our offensive line did a good job giving Grant time and he made a good pass to Gage.

“Then our receivers did a good job blocking down field and got Gage in the open and we always like our chances when that happens.”

The touchdown was the third of four for Parrick, who ran for touchdowns of 4, 9 and 56 yards.

Drew Elerick scored twice, once on a pass and once on an interception, and Chasen Neuman and Matthew Beck scored once each.

“We were clearly the better team, but I will give our guys credit for coming out playing hungry and taking care of business,” Elerick said.
