Lincoln County Sheriff officers and the OSBI are investigating after a body was found in a creek in the north central portion of Lincoln County in the Tryon area.

Sgt. Aaron Bennett with the Sheriff’s Office said it’s too early to know if the body is that of a man reported missing by his family on Aug. 13. The body was discovered on Tuesday, Aug. 22, nine days after the family notified authorities that Cody Washington was missing.

Bennett reported they are unsure of the identity or cause of death.

“The State Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the identity of the body and the cause of death,” Bennett explained.

The body was found about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22 by a friend of Cody Washington who apparently was searching for him.

According to a Missing Person’s Report, Washington, 35, was last seen in the Tryon area on Aug. 13. That reported indicated Washington was known also to frequent Perkins which is located north of the Tryon area in Payne County.

Bennett noted that he was not sure how long Washington might have been missing before the family notified the Sheriff’s Office.

He said the Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the OSBI, who came to the scene. The Iowa Tribal Police were also there to assist, he added.
