With the goal of 10,000 Steve said they’d be able to give each expecting mother four diapers.
Steve said it doesn’t matter of the shirt has holes or stains, since it will be cut up and changed.
The deadline for this goal is Oct. 16, and with COVID-19 interfering, Steve said donations had slowed down.
Steve said they started this proces two and a half months ago and have had people donating from 14 states and one foreign country.
“I believe we’re going to hit it,” he said.
Steve said once the word got out that they were collecting shirts, donations came pouring in.
A man in Denver, CO sent in 1,000 shirts, Girl Scout Troops hosted t-shirt fundraisers and over 100 people began mailing in shirts.
Steve said they currently have over 7,000 shirts.
After Oct. 16, Steve will drive all the t-shirts to a church in Illinois, where a group of seamstresses will begin cutting the t-shirts and turning them into diapers.
By the end of the year, all 10,00 shirts will be transformed into diapers and sent to Nicaragua where they will serve a new purpose.
T-shirts can be donated at the Lincoln County Farm Center in Chandler.
“Because of the tremendous response, we’ll be doing it again,” he said.
Steve said they plan on helping this ongoing need in Nicaragua in the years to come.
