Town Talk

Well, I didn’t start off 2022 with a bang. I missed the deadline last week on getting Town Talk into the newspaper. Town Talk projects and community activities slow down during this cold weather so sometimes there’s not much news to tell you. I’m back in the swing of things though and I will continue to keep you updated right here in the Stroud American.

I received some sad news this week. Stroud graduate of the class of 1967 Johnny Terry, Jr. passed away after a battle with leukemia. Johnny currently resided in Aurora, Colorado. He was the son of long-time Stroud residents Johnny and Bernice Terry. I was eleven years old when he graduated from high school, so we weren’t “running buddies” but I looked up to the upperclassmen feeling I knew them because my mom was a Stroud High School teacher. When he was growing up, he was known around town as Peewee. Johnny would return to Stroud often to visit his Oklahoma sisters, Cathy, Barbara, Bette and Mary. It wasn’t unusual to catch him hanging out at his sister Cathy’s gift shop, Unique Market, on alumni weekend. Like many graduates from Stroud, he stayed connected with his buddies from high school. After learning of his illness, classmates Ronnie Baker and Terry Morris made the trek out to Colorado to visit and reminisce with Johnny. Cathy told me his spirits were lifted after their visit. His funeral service will be held on January 19th at 10:30 a.m. at the first Methodist Church of Stroud. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, January 18th from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Parks Bros. Funeral Home in Stroud. You will find Johnny’s obituary in this paper.

Wirt Trawick called me the other day bragging on how our cemetery looks. He was pleased to see the new fence going up and thought those of you who get your Stroud news through the newspaper would be interested in knowing about it. Those of us who have loved ones there are especially appreciative of the attention shown by our City. I was glad Wirt called and reminded me about this City project. If you have information you would like to let people know about just give me a call at 918-527-9833 and if it’s appropriate for this column, I’ll put it in. Stroud Municipal

Hospital has been getting great reviews these last few months. Wanda Gilman, Billie Black and Helen Amos (sorry HIPAA) have all, unfortunately, had to spend time out there recently. They couldn’t say enough good things about the care and treatment they received during their stay. Thank you to Administrator Ed Dyer and all the hospital professionals and staff for making our hospital a great place for patients to receive medical treatment. We are so fortunate to have a local hospital.

The Stroud Food Pantry has reopened for 2022. The next food distribution date is Tuesday, January 25th from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. The Community Clothing Ministry is also open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, January 17th, so there will be no school that day.

I know it’s cold outside, but I hear our merchants and restaurant owners have their heaters up and running and keeping things nice and toasty inside for your shopping and dining pleasure. Be sure and visit them. Thank you for choosing to shop local…………… first!
