Wellston comeback sinks Okeene

The Wellston Tigers rang up 42 points in the second half Friday to bury the Okeene Whippets 70-46.

Wellston trailed at the half 32-28, but outscored the Whippets 14 points in the third quarter to take a lead they never relinquished.

“I’m proud of our guys,” said Wellston coach James Jones. “We went into halftime down, came back out and fought to take the lead.

“Our guys never stopped fighting.

The Tigers got out to a 12-0 lead in the first period on a 51-yard Alec Hagar pass to Dakota Long pass and an interception returned for a touchdown by McKoy Coulson.

Okeene took the lead in the first period and held it until the 9:44 mark of the third quarter, when Hagar hit Coulson for a 53-yard scoring pass to make it 36-32.

After that, it was all Wellston.

Hagar finished with 173 yards passing and three touchdowns and rushed for 151 more and four touchdowns.

Chisum Whitnah added 72 yards on 14 carries.

Coulson had two catches for 67 yards, Dakota Long had one for his touchdown and Tyler Evans had two catches for 25 yards and score. Whitnah added three receptions for 30 yards.

Now 2-3 on the season, Wellston goes to Velma-Alma Friday night.
