McLoud wins, faces Kingfisher next

The McLoud Redskins, coming off a resounding 48-20 win over previously undefeated Mount St. Mary’s, host No. 8 rated Kingfisher Friday night at Redskin Field.

McLoud Coach Rusty Hall said kickoff is at 7 p.m. and pre-game homecoming festivities will begin around 6:30.

Hall called last Friday night’s contest with the Rockets a tale of two halves.

“We were actually down 20-14 at halftime,” he said. “We weren’t playing real well defensively and we gave up a long pass for a touchdown.”

The Rockets were 4-0 headed into the game with McLoud.

“We dropped the first five passes Collin, our quarterback, threw. Perfect passes and our receivers just dropped them” he said. “A couple would have gone for touchdowns.”

Hall said the first half “was a lack of execution on both sides of the ball. We got them motivated at halftime.

“We were executing our game plan in the second half. We scored five touchdowns and held them scoreless.”

He pointed to moving Tryce Lewis, 6-3 and 285 pounds, from defensive end to nose guard just before intermission as a big difference.

“They just couldn’t run on us after that,” the coach said.

Senior quarterback Collin Gibson led the rushing attack for the Redskins, carrying the ball 22 times for 187 yards and four TDs. Hall said Gibson only threw the ball nine times. He didn’t have any TD passes, but he did throw for a two-point conversion Hall said.

Sophomore running back Clint Campbell rushed for 145 yards and two TD’s on 12 carries.

“We received the opening kickoff and on the first play from scrimmage Clint ran for 64 yards and a touchdown,” Hall said.

The coach said the Rockets had one long pass play for a score. “They had about 140 total yards rushing, and 110 of it was in the first half.”
