Wellston High School returns a stand-out threesport starter for the 2020- 2021 school year. McKoy Coulson, a senior and expected four-year letterman, won Wide Receiver of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year awards in 2019 and 2020 for his football and basketball teams, respectively. In fact, McKoy is a threetime Offensive Player of the Year for his basketball team and has also won Rookie of the Year for his baseball team.

McKoy set school records last football season for most receiving yards for one game, most TDs receptions for one game, most receptions in one year, most receiving yards in one year, and most TD receptions in one year.

But there’s more to the story. McKoy is a third generation Wellston Tiger. His grandfather, Fred Coulson, began his teaching and coaching career at Wellston in 1970. For more than a decade, he taught wood shop and coached middle school boys’ basketball and baseball.

He held this position until 1981, at which time he started Wellston’s Coordinated Vocational Educational Training (CVET) shop program. During this time, Mr. Coulson and his shop class constructed some of the locker rooms and coaches’ offices that are still being used today. He also constructed the press box and helped build the home bleachers at the football field.

Later, at the superintendent’s insistence, Fred raised that same press box by several feet, a task accomplished without the use of heavy equipment. Mr. Coulson and his son Marty built the pipe perimeter fence around the entire football complex in 1996. Mr. Fred Coulson fully retired from Wellston Public Schools in 2010.

McKoy’s father, Monty, was also a standout receiver at Wellston during the late 1980’s and 90’s. He graduated high school with the school record for career touchdown receptions. Monty also ranked in the top four or higher at Wellston for most yards receiving in a year, most yards receiving in a career, most receptions in a career, and most touchdown receptions in one year. He also started at safety on defense and was a stand-out basketball player. Monty graduated from Wellston in 1991 and is employed at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City.

McKoy’s uncle, Marty, played football under Coach Dickie Smith in the 7th and 8th grades and was also an exceptional varsity basketball player. At the time, Wellston did not have a football field, and practices were conducted in a vacant lot. During Marty’s freshman year in high school, he started working for the Town of Wellston.

On his first day on the job, his boss sent him to Wellston’s soon-to-be new football field to help lay sod. The entire Wellston custodial staff, coaches, and others worked all day to lay the sod, providing Wellston with the football field used to this day. Marty began his teaching career at Wellston in 1995 as the agricultural educa tion instructor and FFA advisor. He is currently the high school principal.

As McKoy takes the field this year, he will look to add to a legacy at Wellston now 50 years strong. Go Tigers!
