Tony Wilson and Shane Massie are hosting the first-ever Chandler Sweeps.
The event is to help beautify Chandler and will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17.
Wilson and Massie were born and raised in Chandler, Oklahoma, and say they want to give back to the community that they love.
“I own some property on Manvel,” Massie said. “Most people call it Main Street, even though it’s not Main Street.
And whenever we were kids there were two guys that went around town and cleaned stuff up… neither one of them are still around, and a town that has as much history and as nice as what Chandler is…
“There’s no reason there should be trash and debris and weeds growing up in it,” Massie said.
The primary goal of the event is to pick up trash, sweep away dirt and pull weeds. So far, they say they have seen a fair amount of community interest, and Wilson created a Facebook Event called “Chandler Sweeps”.
Massie is heavily involved in the event, but says Wilson is the driving force behind it all.
“Shane and I both are lifelong Chandler people,” Wilson said. “We just love the town of Chandler.
“I was tired of everybody complaining about the downtown area looking as bad as it does. It’s time we don’t be key board advocates, we need to be true advocates…it’s people like me and him in their 40s that have to step up to the plate.”
Wilson has been in contact with Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Incorporated which has given trash sacks, gloves and safety vests to be used at the event.
“I want to be remembered like Alan Conway,” I was talking to Mike Goodman here at the funeral home. He said, ‘You just really didn’t know what Alan was involved with until he sat down and talked about it,’” said Wilson.
Both men have high hopes for the event and hope to have many volunteers for the cleanup.
Dinner will be provided by Big Willy’s Hot Dogs for all of the volunteers. If you are interested in helping with the clean up, call Tony Wilson at (405) 240-7469.
