AARP Oklahoma announced the town of Wellston is one of four Oklahoma organizations that will receive a 2022 Community Challenge grant. These organizations are part of the largest group of grantees to date, with $3.4 million awarded among 260 organizations nationwide. The grants are for cities, towns, neighborhoods, and rural areas that can implement quick-action projects that help communities become more livable in the long-term, with an emphasis on the needs of adults age 50 and over.
The town of Wellston will use the grant to help renovate Wellston’s community park area and include lighted ADA-compliant walking trails that promote exercise and health initiatives, specifically for those ages 50+. The town also plans to provide shade coverings around age-friendly/ ADA-compliant park tables, benches, and games. “AARP Oklahoma is committed to working with communities to improve residents’ quality of life through tangible changes,” said AARP OK State President Jim Randall. “We are proud to collaborate with the town of Wellston as they make immediate improvements to their park to jumpstart long-term change, especially for Oklahomans 50 and over.”
“I appreciate AARP Oklahoma’s investment into the Wellston community. I have long supported projects to improve the quality of life in my district, and this will help our older and younger citizens alike pursue healthy activities in a beautiful community park,” said State Representative Kevin Wallace.
