Halloween

This year’s Trick or Treat night is upon us.

The official Trick or Treat night is Oct. 31, which is Friday evening this year.

Last year around our place, we could see that people again were becoming comfortable with these kinds of activities.

I was glad to see that. This year, my wife Pat and I aren’t sure what to expect.

Meeker is having theirs on Friday night from 6-8 p.m. The town’s Trustees voted on that earlier this month on Oct. 20 to make sure everyone knew.

Last year, the kids weren’t flocking to our front door by any means. They were though, at least out and about.

I usually purchase our candy way early, just so we just don’t have to worry about it, and before it gets picked over. But I noticed this weekend there looked like there was still a variety to choose from.

I bought too much candy last year, but I often do that to make sure we have plenty.

I was reflecting back the other day and remembering several years ago that many areas throughout Oklahoma, including Lincoln and Pottawatomie Counties had just experienced an unusual, powerful ice storm in late October.

Thousands of people were still recovering and picking up from it and many people in some areas in the state were still without power.

The storm hit on a Monday and Tuesday of that week. I honestly don’t ever remember when I was growing up having an ice storm before Halloween.

Our grandson is already for Trick or Treat night. My wife ensured he has the costume he wanted by ordering it early. He and his dad Terry sent photos of it after it arrived at their house and he tried it on to make sure it fit and he seemed excited, happy and pleased.

There were no worries about the weather last year. It was picture perfect and couldn’t have been much better for this time of year. According to forecasters, it’s supposed to be dry and cool.

Pat and I have talked about how much we enjoyed going trick or treating as kids when we were growing up.

When I was a kid, even as I neared being a teenager, the kids I ran around with at that time, we all looked forward to Trick or Treat night. Despite even the coldest October night, or even if it was drizzling or just slightly raining, we bundled up and had a good time.

The bunch I grew up with looked forward to getting the candy and goodies. Even those handing out the candy and goodies, like my parents, enjoyed it as well.

We didn’t have daylight savings time in those days. So, we began right at dark and normally we were finished by 8 or so. We just had a good time.

I remember one time I dressed up as an injured football player, another time as a young hunter I think. It was all about having a good time with our friends.

We hope the kids in our area have a good time again this year.
