With the weather prognosticators predicting a fairly powerful storm this week for Oklahoma and much of the nation, I figured it might be wise to prepare a little.

Around 8 on Monday morning one of the apps on my cell phone alerted me about a winter storm watch for our area beginning around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Then, a little while later, it quickly changed that from about 9 p.m. Tuesday night until 6 p.m. this evening (Thursday).

My wife Pat usually just ignores such alerts. Oh, she’ll watch the weather reports on TV some. But she doesn’t get too excited. She lets me do that.

So, as I was out and around early this week, I began picking up an item or two here and there just in case it got anything like they were predicting.

The snow I enjoy, as long as there is only a few inches of it and it doesn’t impede driving if there’s a good reason to get out.

The sleet and ice not so much because of the havoc it can wreak on roads, power lines and the outages that can come from it.

Since we have plenty of firewood now, and I’ve been trying to keep the fireplace cleaned out, I decided it would be good if I brought up some additional pieces to keep it under cover. I also thought it would be wise if we had our propane tanks full for cooking purposes if needed.

As I mentioned in another recent column we’ve been feeding our small feathered friends who sometimes find it difficult to find a food source. So, I placed plenty of that out for them.

Not worried about water because if it snows the birds can obtain water from it. We no longer have to worry having water outside because we no longer have one.

I made sure and filled up my car with gas in case I must get out and travel and Pat keeps plenty in hers also.

While I have no idea really what this storm will bring, how bad it may or may not get, I just don’t think it hurts to be a little prepared for it. I do feel comfortable, however, in saying that the weather conditions were going to deteriorate by the time you read this.

It looks likes the weather is going to improve for the next few days anyway and other than snow this hasn’t been as bad as they predicted.
