Last week I wrote that my wife Pat and I were looking forward and really excited about Thanksgiving because our family was gathering and that included our daughter Meghan, her husband Terry and their son Liam, (our grandson).
Well, Thanksgiving Day was as delightful as we had hoped. The whole four days, Thursday through Sunday were nice because Pat and I got to spend some uninterrupted time together getting some things done and at a pace that wasn’t hurried.
First of all, Pat and I don’t participate in the Black Friday craziness of competing with all the shoppers trying to find all of those “great deals.”
Instead, I intertwined doing some work for the paper in with helping Pat accomplish a tradition that we’ve tried to do most every Friday after Thanksgiving and that’s put up the Christmas tree.
After I went out and picked up some breakfast for Pat and me, I got work done on the paper while she did a few household chores.
By late morning, it was time to tackle putting up the tree itself. I retrieved the tree from the garage where we keep it and helped her get the tree up. Once that is achieved, the decorating with all the unbreakable bulbs is left to her.
I went out in the front yard and finished putting some additional lights on the shrubs and later putting back up the ornaments and assortment of items we didn’t need.
Pat does such a wonderful job with the decorations. She’s learned through the years she prefers the larger bulbs because it doesn’t take as long to put them on the tree and they are so pretty.
There’s one she always places at the top of the tree and I helped guide her with that at her request.
By that time it was well into the afternoon so we just kind of took it easy the remainder of the day and evening. For supper we enjoyed some of the leftovers that our daughter Meghan had sent home with us.
Come Saturday, we sat around and had our morning coffee like we do most weekends. I ran a few errands during the day but we just mostly took it easy on Saturday and that evening we grilled steaks.
After church on Sunday, following breakfast, again we were in no hurry for much of anything until shortly after noon. That’s when we decided to head out to a couple of the stores for some items we needed and took for our grandson Liam a present he has requested.
We found it okay and we went at the right time. The stores had some business all right, but they weren’t at all crowed by then. We headed home after we found it and just relaxed the remainder of the day and evening.
How pleasant it was to spend a few days getting a few things done but with no deadlines and just taking it easy.
