Davenport’s Bulldogs jumped out to a two touchdown lead on Alex in a road contest last week, but couldn’t hang on and lost 36-32.
The Bulldogs are 1-2 on the season and Coach Grant Powell said it doesn’t get any easier this week as they travel to Depew on Thursday night. He noted kickoff is at 7 p.m.
“We came out on fire, scored on our first two offensive drives and stopped them on their first two couple of drives as well. But on our fourth offensive possession, we threw to Reece Murfin and he suffered a game ending injury,” Powell said.
Powell explained his Bulldogs seemed to not play as well after that but added, “We never stopped fighting. Playing Alex will help us prepare for the playoffs,” the coach believes.
Davenport opens district play in a couple of weeks, he said. Sophomore quarterback Chase Mitchell completed 9 of his 18 passes for 231 yards through the air, he suffered one interception but had one rushing touchdown.
Brody Robinson rushed the ball 11 times for 99 yards, had one rushing TD, four receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns.
Robinson led the team on defense with 20 total tackles, 13 of which were solo.
Also on defense Aydan Stancell had 14 total tackles, eight of those unassisted and he forced a fumble.
Jeb Kalka had a fumble recovery returned for a TD, “We didn’t get a couple of breaks and that didn’t help,” Powell noted. Looking ahead to Depew in a Thursday night contest this week, the coach stated, “They’s a good football team. We’re going to have to cover the pass. They are well-coached, they like to throw it and they like to spread it out,” he said.
Powell said he told his kids, “This is like the Bedlam game for us. That’s our approach.”
He pointed out that on Monday he was unsure of the status of Reece Murfin for Thursday night’s game.
