Davenport went on the road for the second time in as many weeks and this time came home with a 32-28 victory over Depew.
Davenport head coach Grant Powell had told his kids, he said, that the matchup was similar to that of a “Bedlam game.”
Powell said this week, “It was a comeback win. With eight minutes to go we were down 28-18. Depew snapped it over the quarterback’s head and a host of Bulldogs swarmed the ball with Brody Robinson recovering it for a touchdown.”
Powell noted, “On Depew’s next drive, we stopped them at the 45 yard line on fourth and three. We took over and ran nine plays in 4½ minutes and Chase Mitchell finished it off with TD run.”
He said Depew got the ball back, and Laken Durbin got a strip and Robinson grabbed the fumble with just under a minute to go.
Powell said the Bulldogs, now 2-2, host Yale Friday might in a homecoming matchup.
The kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. and homecoming festivities begin at 6:30.
The coach pointed out Yale is 1-3 but their record doesn’t reflect how good they are. “They are big and physical up front and we’re going to have to spread it out,” he believes.
The coach said he thought the Bulldogs played well though they got a little stagnant in the third quarter. Chase and Brody played well, Brody was our workhouse on offense, he said.
Robinson rushed the ball 25 times for 156 yards and he had six receptions for 47 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Chase Mitchell was 16 of 24 passing for 162 yards through the air including a touchdown, he had nine rushes for 28 yards including twoTDs on the ground.
Mark Mascho had two receptions for 34 yards and Ivan Morris had two receptions for 22 yards.
Robinson led the defense with 16 total tackles, 12 of which were unassisted, 2 fumble recoveries and one of those was for a TD.
Devin Murfin had seven solo tackles with a total of nine.
Laken Durbin had a total of four tackles and he forced a fumble.
Ayden Stancell had four tackles and a pass deflection.
