Stroud romps past Newkirk

Stroud made quick work of Newkirk last week, putting up a 70-0 district win.

The Tigers now stand 6-1 for the season and 4-0 in district, with a showdown looming with district coleader Hennessey on Halloween night in Stroud.

The Tigers have gone through their district schedule like Sherman through Georgia, winning their four games by a total score of 217-22. The Newkirk game was no different.

“We started subbing out on defense halfway through the second quarter and we were completely subbed out by half,” said coach Josh Presley.

“I tell the kids, ‘no matter who play, we’re going to focus on ourselves.’

“We have to continue to strive to do all the little things as well as we can, and then the little things take care of the big things.”

The Tigers turned in some long scoring plays and led Newkirk 36-0 after one period.

Jacob Beck broke early scoring runs of 40, 47 and 29 yards and quarterback Jeremiah Cropp hooked up with Aiden Collins on a 70-yard catch-and-run scoring play.

“Jeremiah played really well,” Presley said. “I was very happy with Chalin Morris. He’s been a linebacker, but last week we asked him to play nose guard for us and he did a fantastic job.

“Our entire defense played well - I think they were minus-nine yards on the night.

“On offense, I thought our offensive line played well and our running backs ran hard. Kiegan Smith stepped in at quick tackle and did a good job for us.

“This week we’re playing Casady and they throw it around more than anybody else we face all year, and they’ll present a new set of challenges we haven’t faced this year.”
