Davenport football coach John Greenfield described his team’s 49-0 loss to Wetumka last week as a “game of errors.”
“The very first snap on offense we fumbled and they scooped it up and scored,” Greenfield said.
“They also did the same thing later in the contest and a similar thing when we were trying to punt the ball and they scored,” the coach noted.
“They had three touchdowns off our offense,” Greenfield said.
The Bulldogs, now 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the district, are preparing to host Depew in the final regular contest of the season. “We’re playing for third and fourth place,” he said of this Friday night’s game.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. He said the winner of the game goes to Regent Prep and the loser to Drumright in next week’s first round of the playoffs.
Greenfield pointed out the Bulldogs will be without two of their regulars for Friday night’s game because they will be attending the National FFA conference in Indianapolis, Ind. But they will be back for the first round of the playoffs.
He said running back Dez Finney hurt a knee last Friday night and is questionable for the Depew contest. “It’s the same knee he hurt earlier in the season,” the coach said.
“Our depth will be way down with the other two at the FFA conference and if Dez can’t play,” he said.
Greenfield said against Wetumka, “We finally got some things going on offense but we couldn’t stop them.”
He expects Depew to run a typical 3-2 defense, the same the Bulldogs have seen the last two weeks. “They’ll run out of the pistol offense. They’re average on defense,” he thinks.
The Bulldogs managed only 69 yards rushing and had no passing yards.
Riley Ethridge led rushers with 47 yards and Finney had 18, with Aydan Stancell gaining four yards.
Ethridge had two solo tackles and five assists. Quarterback Colt Metcalf was 0-6 on passing.
Stancell had one interception as did Jackson Lane.
The previous week, the Bulldogs lost to Weleetka, 62-0, in what In what Greenfield said was his team’s worst game of the year, the Bulldogs lost to Weleetka 62-0 recently in a contest that was over by halftime.
“We played our worst game of the year for sure,” he reiterated, noting, “it’s the worst game played by a Davenport Bulldog football team in a long time. It was a team effort,” he said about the loss.
The Bulldogs, 2-6 overall and 1-1 in district, travel to Wetumka this Friday night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m., the coach said.
“It was just a terrible night. We snapped the ball over our quarterback’s head at least four times,” Greenfield said.
“We have to play a lot better this week or it will be another embarrassment,” he stated.
Talking more about last Friday night’s loss, the coach said, “They had big numbers and there weren’t many on our side. It was a debacle, it was over at the half. I forget how many turnovers we had, but it was ugly,” Greenfield lamented.
“They put their second team in when we put ours in and they scored at least 16 points. It was 46-0 when they put their second team in,” he said.
Greenfield pointed out, “Can’t turn the ball over and expect to win or play well. We turned it over at least twice with our second team. Lots of mistakes,” he continued.
The coach stressed, “You just have to put it behind you.”
He said, “We had some kids who really played hard and well. But overall, the team effort was very poor.”
Greenfield says Wetumka is big, they have some good athletes and they’ll try and mix it up. “But they like to run the ball and they have a really good running back who has played three or four years.”
The Bulldogs only were able to muster a total of 87 yards of offense, 36 yards rushing and 51 yards through the air.
Quarterback Colt Metcalf completed 5 of 9 passes with one interception. Dex Finney led Bulldog rushers with yards.
Finney and Riley Ethridge each had four solo tackles.
