Meeker awards high school athletes

COVID-19 may have cancelled the 2020 spring sport season, but it couldn’t cancel Meeker High School from acknowledging their athletes. Listed below are the individual awards and the athletes that received them according to the sport.

Although this year’s spring sports season came to an abrupt halt this year, many schools across Lincoln and Pottawattomie County still awarded their athletes with Athletic Awards. Stroud High School Stroud High School awarded their athletes in each sport.

Candidates named for Girls, Boys State

The 2020 American Legion Auxiliary Oklahoma Girls State and Oklahoma American Legion Boys State were cancelled due to COVID-19. “Boys and Girls State are very prestigious programs,” District 4A Commander George Wooden said.

Chandler hires new coaches

New faces will be found on the sidelines of the court and mat this upcoming season. During the monthly Chandler school board meeting, board members hired Joseph Shawn Blankenship as the head coach for the boys basketball team and John Childress as the head coach for the wrestling team.

Commissioners reopen courthouse

The Lincoln County Courthouse is opened back up. County Commission Chairman Lee Doolen announced Monday he was authorizing the courthouse and lobby to open back up immediately with individual elected officials deciding how many to allow in their office at any time.

Disc golf opens in Stroud

Pictured to the right, Professional Disc Golf Association member Matt Bell throws the first disc at the new disc golf course at Stroud Lake. The new disc golf course opened to the public Friday, May 1. Bell designed the 18 hole, Par 66 course with holes ranging from 200 ft. to 1,000 ft.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced Wednesday that Chandler’s Heath Gray is the 2019-20 National Wrestler of the Year. Gray, a junior at the University of Central Oklahoma, went 29-1 this season and was ranked No. 1 in the country for most of the season. He was the No.
