Town Talk

The Christmas lights are gone from Main Street, but Town Talk is still working on getting our Main Street outlined in white solar lights that would remain up permanently.

Our firemen did three buildings for us but that took them half a day to complete because they were called out on an emergency while working on the project.

Because of the time involved we are looking at hiring a company to put the lights up for us and are currently getting quotes. Don’t think we’ve given up on the idea. We complete our goals but it takes a little longer because we rely on donations and volunteers and so we work on their schedule.

It’s nice to see the construction going on around downtown and see many of the buildings almost finished.

We’ve got Dr. Francis building a new dental office on the east end of Main, Mark Poskey constructing a new building on the west end and Raphe and Andrea Thompson and Cathy Terry’s new store front almost completed right off Main on 5th Avenue. Another new warehouse looks about completed on 2nd Street, too. A lot of activity is going on in Stroud.

The Stroud Food Pantry will be open on Tuesday, January 25th from 9:00 a.m. until noon and the Stroud Clothing Ministry is open every Thursday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. If you need any of the services these two organizations offer, be sure and visit them.

Town Talk volunteer David Evans continues to work on the club house for the mini-golf course, “Putt-Putt Kicks on Route 66.” He told me he’s a builder, not a painter, so Julie Bivin and I will be looking for volunteers to help us paint it once David finishes. I hear he has a “secret helper” that is helping speed up the project, but they try to work only on the days there is some sunshine. Those days have been a little scarce lately. The club house is going to be a unique building and I think you’re going to like it.

I went to see the Beatle’s tribute, “Liverpool Legends,” in Cushing last weekend. Leon & Vivian Henshaw, Steve & Julie Bivin and Larry & I went early to check out the restaurant, Godofredo’s, which is right next door to the Dunkin Theater.

It was my first time to visit the restaurant and the theater. David and Bronwyn Howard came in so we invited them to join us for dinner. It was a nice evening visiting with Stroud friends.

The theater has been wonderfully renovated and the live show was excellent. It’s quite a treat to have such a quality venue in our area. I miss the events that we held at Territory Cellars, so it’s nice to have a place close to home that shows first run movies as well as live shows. We also have H&S Theater in Chandler which is a great place to take the family for a movie. Both theaters have played Sing 2 and Spiderman. You can’t get much more current than that. Redbox and Netflix are nice, but I prefer seeing a movie in a theater. I enjoy the whole experience. Reminds me when I was a kid, I would go to the Time Theater in Stroud when Mr. & Mrs. Neesmith operated it. I saw several Elvis movies there and the churches would sometimes show Christian movies like Cross and the Switchblade. Those were fun times. I think we should support our local community as much as we can but then it’s nice to patronize our surrounding communities as well.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so it’s not too early to start thinking about what to buy that special someone in your life. Check out our local merchants for gift ideas and remember to make a reservation to dine in Stroud. It’s on a Monday this year. so it could slip up on you if you’re not careful. Have a great week and thank you for choosing to shop and dine local…………first!
