Fatal crash near Meeker

A two-vehicle traffic collision east of Meeker in Lincoln County has injured a Chandler man and resulted in the death of a Beggs resident, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

State Trooper Eric Smith identified the Beggs resident as Robert Sumner, 31. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency medical personnel, Smith said.

The injured Chandler man was identified as Andrew Freppon, 20. Smith said he was transported by Airvac to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with leg and internal injuries and was in fair condition.

The fatal collision occurred around 5:22 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 62 about one mile east of Meeker at approximately County Road 3450, the trooper stated.

Smith said Freppon was driving a 2020 Chevy Silverado and Sumner was driving a 2022 Chrysler Voyager.

Both Sumner and Freppon were employed by the John Lilley Correctional Center in Boley, according to information provided Monday by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Sumner and Freppon had graduated in November of 2023 from the ODOC academy, the ODOC said.

Sumner was driving an ODOC van en route to OU Medical Center in Edmond to work a hospital shift and Freppon was in his personal vehicle headed to JLLC in Boley to work his regular shift, the ODOC information said.

Trooper Smith said cause of the collision and what happened are still under investigation.

Condition of both drivers at the time of the collision was apparently normal, Smith reported.

Seat belts were equipped and in use by both drivers.
