This year’s Halloween night is just two weeks away. Not sure even what all the times are in the communities for Trick or Treaters to make their way through neighborhoods and some businesses in Lincoln County, though Meeker’s is between 6 and 8 p.m. on Halloween, Oct. 31.
My wife Pat and I aren’t quite sure ever what to expect. If the weather is nice, even if it’s cool but not real cold and windy, we usually get a decent turnout from the kids.
They don’t necessarily flock to the front door by any means, but they’ll start showing up usually around 6 and are pretty well finished by 7:30. Occasionally we’ll get a straggler or two after that.
I never know how much candy to purchase and I always seem to overbuy.
But I don’t want to run out of it and have to turn our lights off early. So far, we’ve never had to do that.
Last year, if I remember right, we had a decent number who stopped by.
We’ve resided here at our house for more than 46 years.
So the kids who were growing up when we moved into our house are grown and have their own, some of whom have moved away.
Some have kids who have children of their own and they come back for Trick or Treat night and we always enjoy seeing some of them.
Pat and I also talk about how much we enjoyed going trick or treating as kids when we were growing up. I just always had a good time going out with my friends.
When I was a kid, even as I neared being a teenager, the kids I ran around with at that time, we all looked forward to Trick or Treat night. Despite even the coldest October night, or even if it was drizzling or just slightly raining, we bundled up and had a good time.
Not much stopped us from going out and getting that candy and the goodies. The bunch I grew up believed in getting the treats and forgetting about playing any tricks.
Even those handing out the candy and goodies, like my parents, enjoyed it as well.
We didn’t have daylight savings time in those days.
So, we began right at dark and normally we were finished by 8 or so. We just had a good time.
I remember one time I dressed up as an injured football player, another time as a young hunter I think.
Most of what we were dressed up as were just self-made, rather than going out and buying a bunch of costumes.
It was all about having a good time with our friends.
