Sequoyah Day at Wellston

Above and to the right, students and volunteers take part in Sequoyah Day at Wellston Elementary School on Sep. 19. Several volunteers came to read books and give presentations. The day celebrated the Sequoyah Book Awards, which are handed out every year. The awards are named after Sequoyah, who developed the Cherokee Syllabary -- a writing system adopted by the Cherokee Nation in 1825. Students in grades three through five who have read three Sequoyah books are eligible to vote for their favorite Sequoyah book around the first of March. Photos/Janet Humphrey
