Students win awards at ECU competition

Two Lincoln County students at Seminole State College have brought home awards from a recent business-focused competition at East Central University on Nov. 12.

Ava Freeze from Prague was part of a two-person team that competed in a Shark Tank-inspired competition called Tiger Tank. The two won first place in the underclassmen division for their business, Savalon, a full-service family salon with a “welcoming, community-centered focus,” according to a press release from SSC.

Jentrie Gibson, a sophomore from Chandler, competed in the Tiger Trak stock trading challenge and was second runner-up. In the challenge, students had to manage a simulated $1 million portfolio over the course of a month, the press release said.

The students who took part in the competition spent about six weeks preparing, and Business Professor and Entrepreneurs Club Sponsor Brad Schatzel was proud of their commitment.

“I am proud of these students; they prepared and performed well,” he said.

The competition also included morning pitches, a networking lunch and a guest entrepreneur lecture. Winners received cash prizes ranging from $25 to $250, the press release said.
