Sherman Allen Bellmyer, who was previously arrested on Aug. 9 for one charge of lewd or indecent proposals or acts to a child, has been formally charged, according to court documents.
Bellmyer, 59, worked as the elementary school principal at Carney Public Schools at the time of his arrest. He has been charged with one felony count of lewd or indecent proposals to a child under 16, according to the court documents. Lincoln County District Attorney Adam Panter filed the charge on Aug. 27.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Carney Police Chief Brittney Alzyoud received a phone call on Aug. 8 at around 8 p.m. from the Lincoln County Communication Center in regards to an alleged sexually innappropiate releationship between Bellmyer and a 14-year-old minor. It was reported by two witnesses -- a friend of the minor and their parent.
The witnesses provided some evidence of alleged inappropriate communications between Bellmyer and the minor to Alyzoud. They also agreed to provide a phone that was used to record a phone conversation between the two for a forensic download, as the audio had been deleted, according to the affidavit.
The report said that the parents of the minor were unaware of the situation until contacted byAlyzoud. She spoke with the minor, who stated that they had been “friends” with Bellmyer for approximately three years prior to his reaching out via a social media app in June. They further stated that there had been no physical encounter, though they had planned to meet a couple of times, but it fell through, according to the affidavit.
The friend told the chief that the minor had been in Bellmyer’s office frequently during the previous school year.
