Bulldogs dominate previously unbeaten Summit

Carson Funk accounted for all six Davenport touchdowns in the 40-20 rout of then-undefeated Summit Christian Academy last Friday.

On Davenport’s first possession, Jeff Greenfield and staff dialed up a Funk run that went for 46 yards, basically untouched. After Casey Harelson hauled in the two-point conversion pass from Funk, the Bulldogs led 8-0 and never looked back.

“We thought we could dominate them physically. Tonight, I think we did that.” Greenfield said.

Harelson came up clutch on Davenport’s ensuing defensive stand. The junior rushed SCA’s Wyatt Austin, resulting in an intentional grounding penalty and a 4th and 25 for the Eagles. SCA was unable to convert, providing Davenport with ideal field position.

At the 5:28 mark of the first quarter, Funk added to the Davenport lead, scoring from three yards out. The two-point conversion failed and the Bulldogs held a 14-0 advantage.

SCA made things relatively interesting on their second possession of the second quarter. Eagle receiver Nick Baker scored on a 62-yard hook-up with the captain and signal caller, Austin. Jorge Gardner kicked the extra point and Davenport maintained a 14-7 lead.

Just when the SCA defense corralled the Bulldogs’ ground game, Davenport receiver Colton Vanfossen beat his man deep, scoring on a 69-yard bomb from Funk. The conversion failed and Davenport maintained a 20-7 edge.

On the ensuing defensive stand, Parker Mitchell forced and recovered a fumble, giving the Bulldogs ideal field position. A few plays later, Funk and Vanfossen

A few plays later, Funk and Vanfossen hooked up on a 40 yard pitch and catch. With 1:12 remaining Davenport led 26- 7.

Campbell Miller’s interception right before halftime shut down any hope of an SCA first-half rally.

Davenport led SCA 26-7 at intermission.

With 10:01 left in the game, SCA closed the gap when Austin hit CJ Parker for a six-yard score. A failed conversion resulted in Davenport’s lead trimmed to 26-13. The threat briefly con

The threat briefly continued.

Eagles junior receiver Nick Baker beat the defense on a 62-yard pass from Austin. With 6:26 remaining, Gardner’s kick cut the Bulldog’s lead to 26-20.

Davenport’s Funk took over once again. The Bulldogs’ dual-threat scored on a 29-yard scamper. With 3:37 remaining Davenport led 32-20.

“We shot ourselves in the foot with a few touchdowns that were called back, but that was our own fault, Greenfield said. “Their defense forced us to buckle down and run the ball.”

For insurance, Funk took one 80 yards to the house. Freshman quarterback Chance Acord hit Parker Mitchell for the two-point conversion.

“Carson can get after it,” Greenfield said. “He has a great group of blocking for him with Parker [Mitchell] at fullback. We know Carson has great vision and can make the play.” The win propels Dav
