Observing Memorial Day

America once again will celebrate Memorial Day Weekend over the next few days. I look forward to it. It’s an opportunity to gather with family members, a time for reflection and visiting cemeteries to remember those who have passed on before us.

Alumni parade

The annual Chandler alumni parade came down Manvel Avenue Saturday. One of the featured elements was this year’s class of graduating seniors (top), most in costumes. Above left was one of the more distinctive entries, with recliners atop a school bus.

McLoud Museum dinner

McLoud Historical Society Museum and Heritage Center will be hosting its annual Sunday Dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 6. McLoud Masonic Lodge No. 126 is the sponsoring organization for the event, which will be at the McLoud museum, 421 W. Broadway.

East Side Elementary rodeo

The pre-schoolers at East Side Elementary School in Chandler celebrated the end of school with a rodeo last week. Above left, Aspen Atnip and Hazel Miller compete in the stick horse race and, top right, Aylen Davis and Tayson Brown joined in when it was their turn.

Stroud Arts Spray Mural Competition

Stroud Arts is hosting their First Annual Spray Paint Mural Competition which will be held at the Stroud Summer Fest 2021, on Saturday June 12 from 10am to 5 pm. The wining artist or team of artists will be given a place wall space in downtown Stroud to recreate their competition entry.

Return of Faith 7 festivities

I see where the annual Faith 7 bowl is back after a taking a year off due to COVID-19. The game is slated for Saturday, June 5, at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Noble Complex.

McLoud Foundation awards scholarships

The McLoud School Foundation presented six $1,000 scholarships at the McLoud High School Academic Awards Program held recently.

Getting to evaluate applicants for scholarships

Last week I had the opportunity to be involved in reviewing applications for an annual scholarship that our Shawnee Rotary Club provides. Along with several other Rotarians, I had the privilege of helping decide from about 10 applications submitted by seniors from two area high schools.

Food giveaway in Wellston

On Friday, May 14 , free food will be distributed through the USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box Program. The boxes contain a meat product, dairy, fruit and vegetables so plan for refrigeration. The program benefits farmers and prevents the waste of agriculture products.
