The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary met on September 14th. This was the first regular monthly meeting held since the pandemic started. Those attending the Legion meeting were Commander Michael Horwath, Steve Bivin, Brandon Quinn and David Carroll. Auxiliary members in attendance were Diana McGuire, Julie Bivin, Marsha Morgan, Delores Hamlin, Jo Braden, Maxine Jordan, Velma Brant, Diana Reed, Linda Waller and Aleta Smalley.

The Auxiliary meeting was called to order by President Diana Reed. Sergeant at Arms Velma Brant led the group in the pledge of allegiance. Treasurer Cindy Mason gave the treasurer’s report and read the minutes from the last meeting. Diana McGuire will take over as the new secretary for the 2020-21 term. Old and new business items were discussed. Members decided due to the on-going situation with COVID-19 they would not hold a reception to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day. Instead, members will deliver a special fall treat to veterans at their homes on that day. It was also decided that the Auxiliary would purchase a Christmas gift for all Legion members as well as take a gift to veterans residing in Prairie Pointe and Stroud Health Care Center South. Members will bring ideas for this activity to the next meeting. Fundraisers discussed were a quilt raffle, an American flowerpot raffle and a live Facebook auction. Those ideas were tabled until the next meeting. At the end of the Legion meeting, new Legion Commander Michael Horwath met with the Auxiliary to introduce himself and to share with them his background and ideas for the American Legion. The meeting was then adjourned.

The next meeting for both groups will be held on October 5th at the American Legion Building. All members are encouraged to attend. Anyone eligible for membership is invited to attend as a guest. If you are interested in joining an application form will be provided to you.
