Child neglect charge

A child neglect charge has been filed against a woman who reportedly abandoned her 12-yearold grandson at the EZ-Go near the 171 mile marker on the Turner Turnpike.

Margaret Rose Humphrey, 59, of Tulsa, was formally charged on Aug. 24 in Lincoln County District Court with child neglect.

Associate District Judge Sheila Kirk set a $5,000 bond for Humphrey. She made her initial appearance on Aug. 26 before Special Judge Emily Mueller who set a pre preliminary hearing for Humphrey for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4.

Humphrey is accused of abandoning a 12-year-old child at the EZ-Go travel plaza located on the turnpike.

In a probable cause affidavit, State Trooper Aaron McKey states that Trooper Stephen Spencer had located a disabled minivan on the turnpike near the 171 mile marker. Spencer had been dispatched to a report of a child abandoned at the EZ-Go and the grandmother traveling eastbound on a flat tire.

Spencer reportedly contacted the driver, Margaret Humphrey, and two of her minor grandchildren. While speaking with her, the trooper learned she had left her 12-year-old grandson at the Chandler EZ-Go near mile marker 171.

Spencer requested the assistance of the Chandler Police Department, who located the 12-year-old alone at the travel plaza. Spencer contacted the boy’s mother, Teka Humphrey, who was working in Owasso and she reportedly left work immediately and got a ride to the EZ-Go in Chandler.

McKey says in the affidavit he arrived to assist Spencer and took Humphrey and her youngest grandson back to the Chandler EZ-Go. Spencer took another grandson back to the EZ-Go. McKey said upon their arrival, he and Spencer contacted Chandler police officers and the 12-year-old.

Once Teka Humphrey arrived, McKey and Spencer spoke with her and the 12-year-old. The grandson told them that they had gone for pizza the night before in Tulsa and then had driven around all night lost. At some point, his grandmother had a blow out on the front driver side tire while on the turnpike.

He further advised them that they pulled into the EZ-Go parking lot to check the condition of the van.
