Davenport falls to Weleetka in opener

The Davenport Bulldogs found it tough sledding in their season opener last Friday night losing 50-0 to No. 1 ranked Weleetka.

Coach John Greenfield said, “Experience got a hold of inexperience,” as he described the loss.

“We played a really good team. They have seven of eight starters back from last year.”

The Bulldogs head to Wetumka Friday night with the opening kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Greenfield said Wetumka was blanked by Dewar in their season opener.

Greenfield said Weleetka scored on the last play of the first half to make it 50-0 and end the contest.

“I have three seniors who haven’t played a lot, two move-in juniors, 15 sophomores and four freshmen,” the coach commented in describing the makeup of this year’s roster.

“We’re starting a freshman quarterback and he’s going to be a good one,” Greenfield believes.

He said his Bulldogs had a few miscues, an interception and they lost a fumble. “It was the first game jitters I think.

“But we’re young and inexperienced. Still, I think we’re going to be good by the time we start district play which is week 6 against Cherokee,” he added.

The Bulldogs had only 11 yards rushing and 67 yards passing for a total of 78 yard on offense.

Case Mitchell was 5-13 passing for 67 yards, with one interception. He had eight yards rushing on five carries.

Ivan Morris had five carries for eight yards and three receptions for 24 yards. Adin Diver had one catch for 38 yards.

Brody Robinson had 10 yards on five carries and three receptions for 20 yards.

Sizing up the contest Friday night with Wetumka on the road, the coach stated, “I think we have a chance. They run a multi-formation offense and a 3-2 defense.”
