Local high school bands score well at Districts

Local high school concert bands competed recently at Districts, with some proceeding to state.

Bands from Chandler, North Rock Creek, Stroud, McLoud, Dale, Meeker and Prague all competed at Districts.

Bands that received Superior ratings and will move forward to State at the end of this month are Chandler, North Rock Creek and Dale.

Stroud band director Kevin Couch said the band earned Excellent ratings on stage and in sight reading, which means they unfortunately didn’t pass through to State.

“Although we believed we played better this year than last, it has a lot to do with the judging panel which is different each year. We always use it as a learning experience and an opportunity to get better year after year,” Couch said.

He said that they still have a number of students who will compete in April at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest at Oklahoma State University.

“As their director, I am extremely proud of the band this year and all the hard work they have done. They continue to grow and expand their individual skills as they look toward their futures. We are just getting started,” he said.

McLoud received Excellent ratings overall. While it wasn’t quite the result that they wanted, according to band director Cody Tollison, they are happy with the progress they’ve made this year.
