Meeker board says ’no’ to state Bible mandate

Meeker Board of Education members this week voted to direct School Supt. Jeff Pruitt not to follow the State Department of Education’s memoranda issued in June and July regarding the acquisition and use of the Bible and those directives.

Pruitt informed the board members it was recommended by the board’s legal counsel not to follow those.

The voted unanimously to have Pruitt not to follow the June 27 and July 27 memorandums.

In their reports, Elementary Principal Sarah Flowers informed the board, “We ended the 23-24 school year with 354 students. Based on pre-enrollment in the spring for this year, we were at 305 in July and since our enrollment week we’ve grown to 355.”

Pointing to some of the maintenance projects done during the summer, she noted, “The hallways, classrooms have new carpet, there is new concrete, an outdoor classroom, the cafeteria and gym look amazing. We’ve touched up in other areas also and the school looks fantastic. A big shout out to Ms. Kim for sprucing up the front of the building last week.

“We are excited to get this year started,” she exclaimed.

Meeker School students start school today, Thursday, Aug. 15.

Middle School Principal Matt Jones said enrollment is at 207 and “We’re in full go. The numbers look good and we’ve added some new teachers.”

High School Principal Brad Buxton told the board, “We’re back into into it. The sophomore class (with 75 students) is the biggest since I’ve been here. The numbers look pretty good, we’re at 241 students.”

The board members, without going into executive session, voted to offer contacts for the 2024-2025 school year to several personnel, approved adjunct teachers and accepted several resignation requests.

Those offered contracts for the 20242025 school year include Veronica Nelson, Middle School paraprofessional, Macie Pittman, Elementary School paraprofessional, Brenna Rodgers, Middle School teacher and Braden Rodgers, High School paraprofessional.

Adjuncts approved include Pat Hargus, government; Debbie Flowers, Elementary music; Jocie Wilson, third grade; Randy Ragland, 6th, 7th and 8th grade physical education; Marcie Simpson, 7th and 8th grade Science; Graham Gooch, Physical Science; Angel Wolford, Economics; and Brenna Rodgers, 6th and 7th grade Science.

Resignation requests accepted include Tammy Green, High School/Middle School cafeteria; Melissa Dozier, High School teacher; and Trey Doss, High School paraprofessional.

Board members also voted approval of adult and student meal prices for the 2024-2025 school year. The proposed increase was requested to meet the required guidelines through the USDA school lunch program.

They include: Adult breakfast, $2.50, Adult lunch, $5, and no change for High School/Middle School breakfast and lunch and no change for Elementary Student breakfast and lunch.

In other business, board members: Voted to approve updates to the District’s CLEP Plan.

Approved a contract for Secondary Career and Technology Education programs for 2024-2025.

Approved a plan and protocol for sudden cardiac emergency.
