Memorial Day events planned

Chandler, Meeker and Stroud are planning to have Memorial Day events.

In Chandler, the American Legion Post 64 along with the local Boy Scouts will be placing flags at the Oak Park Cemetery at 9 a.m., on Saturday, May 29.

The public is welcome to come and help place the flags. Post 64 will also be having their annual Memorial Day ceremony at the American Legion Podium in the cemetery under the flagpole at 11 a.m., on Monday, May 31.

There will be guest speakers, laying of the wreath and more.

The public is welcome and urged to attend to honor veterans who have lost their lives in service.

If there is inclement weather on Memorial Day, the ceremony will be cancelled, but if there is inclement weather on Saturday, they will still place flags on veteran’s graves.

In Meeker, Memorial Day services will be at New Hope Cemetery starting at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 31.

They are encouraging any veteran that has not attended one of these ceremonies to make a special effort to do so this year.

Wilfred Marak started a tradition to place a flag on each Veteran’s grave, and his family continues to do so to this day.

If anyone wishes to help purchase flags, contact a member of the Marak family or Carroll Harper at (405) 973-8047.

Along with the services, there will be a short program. At the services, there will be red Buddy Poppies to share with those that attend.

Anyone that is interested in reading something, singing a patriotic song, or expressing thanks to our country’s Veterans, is welcome to come help with the event.

They are still in need of someone willing to play Taps, but if no one can be found a recording will be played.

There is no electricity at the facility but come, bring a chair and enjoy visiting with those who are attending the event.

This event is meant to honor not only those who died in military service, but their family members as well.

They encourage everyone to bring their children and grandchildren to the cemetery as an opportunity to show the next generation those who came before them.

In Stroud, at the Stroud Cemetery they will be placing flags on Veteran’s graves at 9 a.m., on Thursday, May 27.

They will also be having a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m., on Monday, May 31.

At the service there will be an invocation by Jeromye Jackson the pastor at Stroud First Assembly of God, a laying of the wreath by Delmar Summers, 3rd CL Gunners Mate in the U.S. Navy, a 21 Gun Salute and more.

The public is welcome and encouraged to come to this event.
