Suspended sentence in turnpike case

A Texas motorist who was stopped on the Turner Turnpike arrested and charged with a drug offense has pleaded guilty and drawn a suspended prison term.

Son Chi Nguyen, 45, of Richmond, Texas was charged in Lincoln County District Court Nov. 2, 2023 with unlawful possession of a Controlled Drug with intent to distribute.

He appeared before Special Judge Emily Mueller on the same day he was charged and she set his bond at $5,000. He made his initial appearance on Dec. 7. Judge Mueller set his prepreliminary hearing for April 19, 2024.

Nguyen appeared before Judge Mueller and waived his preliminary hearing. He also waived 30 days and a speedy trial.

Appearing recently for his arraignment before Judge Mueller, Nguyen, as the result of a plea bargain and upon the state’s recommendation entered a guilty plea. He waived the two-judge rule.

The judge found Nguyen guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in the Department of Corrections with all time suspended. She assessed him a $500 fine, $100 VCA and court costs and ordered him to pay 991 fees.

She placed him on supervised probation with DOC and ordered him to report to the Probation Office and the Court Clerk’s Office.

Assistant District Attorney Kelly Trimble handled the case for the state and Nguyen was defended by attorney William Foster.

Supplemental information filed in the case by the District Attorney’s Office shows Nguyen was convicted on Feb. 6, 2012 in the District Court of Hennepin County, state of Minnesota of the felony offense of financial transaction card sentence.
