Town Talk

Town Talk along with the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25th at the Stroud Cemetery.

There will be a short program and a 21-gun salute to honor our deceased veterans.

We will practice social distancing and feel free to wear a mask. Since it is an outside event we have decided not to cancel this year. Some chairs will be available for those needing to sit and cold water will also be provided.

We hope you can join us as we take this time to honor those who gave so much. We will be putting flags on all veteran’s graves on Thursday, May 21st beginning at 9:00 a.m. All community members are invited to volunteer.

Bring your children with you and make it a teaching moment.

Thank you to everyone who purchased a flowerpot a few years ago to help beautify Main Street and to welcome people to our community. Thanks also for your continued support by donating monies for flowers each year.

This project was not a fundraiser. We sold the pots and flowers at our cost. The flowerpots are not all owned by Main Street businesses. Some have been donated by other local businesses and some from out-of-town alums.

Sponsors are David and Angie Poskey Kircher, former state Sen. Jason and C’Anne Smalley, Stroud Health Care South, Aleta Smalley and Dianna Reed, Stroud Clothing Ministry, Tom and Janet Place Huwar, 2 Sisters House Cleaning, Sammy and Marie Mayfield, The Mauldin Family, Mayberry Enterprises, The Clovis Family, Cue & Brew, Stroud United Methodist Church, Stroud Lions Club and Jim Hodgens Law Office. Anyone wanting to purchase a flowerpot for Main Street may still do so.

The cost for the initial sponsorship is $100. This includes the pot, flowers and a sign with your name on it welcoming visitors to Stroud. Town Talk, along with volunteers, maintains them. If anyone would like to volunteer to help water, we would love it! Please contact me at 918-527-9833.

Town Talk’s next project was to fix the bases on the downtown streetlamps. We are working with City Manager Bob Pearman to get this accomplished, so we are starting another project. We have agreed to help raise monies for bathrooms that will be built at the Route 66 pavilion.

The bathrooms will cost $10,000 and Oklahoma Beautiful has donated the first $2,000 of the project. Our volunteer group will begin raising the additional $8,000. If you would like to donate, make your check payable to City of Stroud and mail to me at 301 West 6th Street, Stroud OK. I love visiting communities that have public restroooms.

This will be a welcome addition for visitors as well as the Wine Festival, Farmer’s Market and other activities. We have our first small fundraiser coming up next week. Watch the paper for details.

The first Town Talk Farmer’s Market will be held at the Route 66 Pavilion this Saturday, May 16th beginning at 8:00 a.m. Our newest volunteer, Mandy Clark, has organized the event and is excited for the “kick off.” Come check out all the vendors and see what they have to offer. I know fresh honey is one of the items on tap to be sold. You won’t want to miss it.

Businesses are slowly opening and those who have been open are starting to return to normal business hours. Let’s support merchants as they work to recover from the COVID shutdown. Remember to shop and dine local……….first.
