Wellston man to prison

A Wellston man has pleaded no contest to six counts of sex crimes with a minor under 16 and has been handed a state prison term.

Gary Wayne Shafer, 68, originally was charged in Lincoln County District Court on Sep. 19, 2022 with one count of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16.

The previous District Attorney filed that single count.

On Feb. 22, current District Attorney Adam Panter filed four additional counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 and one count of first degree rape.

Appearing before Associate District Judge Sheila Kirk last Friday, Oct. 20, Shafer pleaded no contest.

The judge received the plea and sentenced him on all six counts to five years on each count in the Department of Corrections to run concurrent.

Judge Kirk also handed him 15 years of supervised probation with the Department of Correction, he is to register as a sex offender, pay 991C fees and pay a $100 fine and $100 VCA per charge, he is to have no contact with the victim and is to report to the Court Clerk’s Office for fines and costs within 180 days of release.

In Counts 1 and 2 that Shafer pleaded no contest to he was accused of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 between Sept. 25 of 1998 through Sep. 25, 2002 in Lincoln County.

Counts 3 charged him with the same type of crime between Sep. 25, 2003 through Sep. 25, 2006 in Lincoln County and Count 4 accused him of that kind of crime between Sep. 25, 2003 through Sep. 25, 2004 in Lincoln County.

Count 5 charged him with the same kind of crime between Sep. 25, 2003 and Sep. 25, 2006.

In Count 6, he was charged with first degree rape between Sep. 25, 2003 and Sep. 25, 2006.
