Wellston roars past Dewey

The Davenport Bulldogs earned their first win of the season last week as they ran by the Depew Hornets 42-14.

Coach John Greenfield said, “We kind of turned it on in the last half after leading 14-0 at halftime.”

The Bulldogs, now 1-3 on the season, travel to Yale for a road contest Friday night. Greenfield said kickoff is at 7 p.m.

The coach noted, “We beefed up our defense a little bit. We changed up some things where we weren’t exerting as much energy and we had a lot more stamina late in the game.”

He thought his Bulldogs “ran and threw the ball well. Overall, we played really well. It was a good rivalry game since they are close and all,” he said.

“Our players were really happy to get a win under their belt after playing so close the last couple of games,” he added.

Davenport dropped their previous two games by four points and one point.

“We cut down on the mistakes and played pretty well for us,” Greenfield believes.

This week’s game at Yale is the last non-district contest. “They’re ranked No. 3 in B-1 and they’re a strong bunch,” the coach thinks.

Freshman quarterback Chase Mitchell led the offense for the Bulldogs, running the ball 18 times for 142 yards and two rushing touchdowns while completing 6 of 14 pass attempts for 129 yards and one TD.

Brody Robinson carried the ball 10 times while gaining 81 yards and scoring a rushing TD. Robinson also had 13 solo tackles and 10 assists, a total of 23 to lead the defense.

Ivan Morris ran for 12 yards on five carries and caught three passes for 59 yards and a TD.

Aydan Stancell picked off a pass and ran it back for 52 yards and a TD while having a total of 12 tackles.

Lakin Durbin and Chris Stibbens each had a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs.

Tyler Gilkison had eight solo tackles and 4 assists for a dozen total tackles plus a sack of the quarterback.

Mark Mascho was a perfect 6 for 6 on extra point attempts.
