Fred Newton Townsley was born December 11, 1934, in Davenport. He died Thursday, January 13, 2022, in Chandler from complications related to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. He was 87 years old.
Townsley, the son of Willis and Zella Bowman Townsley, married Dona Jean Rairdon in April 1961. Following her death, he married Ethel Hopkins on November 11, 1988.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retirement from the military, he worked for CCC in Heber, Ariz., and then as a machinist for Vetco.
Preceding him in death were his parents and three sisters, Alice Rollins, Willa Jean Hogan and Barbara Ann Fears.
Survivors include his wife Ethel Townsley of the home; his children Michelle Townsley, Stephen Townsley and Brad Townsley, all of California; his stepchildren Debbie and Ed Dooley and Rick “Hoppy” and Michelle Hopkins; five grandchildren and their spouses; seven great-grandchildren; his sister Peggie Totten of Prague; and other family and friends.
A funeral was held Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Lehman Funeral Home in Wellston, which handled the final arrangements. Burial followed at Star Valley Cemetery in Chandler. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Marine Corps Heritage Museum, Quantico, Va.
