Happenings at Prairie Pointe

Burr! Baby it was cold last week!

So cold that an elbow joint in our fire suppression system in the attic froze and burst flooding the north end of the hall. But, we are a lucky and blessed bunch here at Prairie Pointe.

First off, it occurred mid-afternoon and within seconds, quick-thinking-staff was rolling sheets and blankets to make barriers to contain the water.

They also opened the back double doors and began sweeping the water out. Only two rooms were totally flooded. The really miraculous thing though was the horde of volunteers that descended on Prairie Pointe within minutes and made quick work of the cleanup.

Tey brought squeegees, shop vacs and blowers. John Alexander just happened to be next door and was here first. Then came Micah Keeling and his crew with the City of Stroud which included Roger Carney, Daniel Bixler, Jeramy Sheperd, Austin Pullin, Jason Ray, Robert Rozell and Wylie Gunter. Firemen Joe Carpenter, Cody Paige and Nick Lakey also came to the rescue as did Miller Ambulance EMS’s Adam Tuttle and Sylvia Jerczynska.

Also, Jerrod Waters and Charles Palmer came in from the Stroud Hospital. Just another example of why small towns rock!

Due to the unfavorable weather forecast for Sunday, Valentine’s Day, Joe Bill and Sharon from the First Christian Church came for church service on Saturday.

Sharon had beautiful hand-crafted valentines for all the residents and staff. Joe Bill shared some statistics on how much money is spent celebrating Valentine’s Day. He then shared scripture from 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter of the Bible.

After a delicious Valentine’s Sunday dinner prepared by Bethani Byford, Rae Bland and Paul Taylor, our newest resident, led us in singing some of our favorite gospel songs accompanied by Alan Jackson and Jim Reeves CD’s. In spite of the harsh weather conditions, residents are thankful for the blessing of living at Prairie Pointe.

Jason Mooy came from the First Assembly for our church services this past Sunday. He played guitar and led us in singing. His two sons sang a long for us. Jason shared the hope we have in God’s power to change people. He read from 1 Samuel showing how God called and used Samuel; Judges to show Gideon’s change and Acts to show the miraculous change in Saul. We are very much enjoying the return of our church friends.

We have started a new book, Cimarron by Edna Ferber. It follows the lives of Yancy and Sabra Cravat beginning with Yancy’s tale of his participation in the 1893 land rush.

They emigrate from Wichita, Kansas, to the fictional town of Osage, Oklahoma with their son Cim. Yancy, a spellbinding criminal lawyer and his well-bred wife work against seemingly overwhelming odds to create a prosperous life for themselves.

And as they establish themselves in this lawless land, Sabra displays a brilliant business sense and makes a success of their local newspaper, the Oklahoma Wigwam, all amidst border and land disputes, outlaws, and the discovery of oil.

We are thrilled to welcome Paul Taylor of Davenport as the newest member of the Prairie Pointe family. Paul was born and raised in Davenport. He retired after 42 years as an educator serving as a principal and band instructor. Paul is past president of the Lincoln County Retired Teachers Association so he is renewing many old acquaintances at PP. More about Paul next week.

Prairie Pointe residents are enjoying our new freedoms thanks to the COVID vaccination; however, we know it is not 100% and many people have yet to get it. We strongly urge you to take the vaccination when you are eligible and continue practicing the 3 W’s –Wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance.
